Proper waste sorting is essential for effective recycling, and as a community, we all have a role to play. At the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) in Bridgend, we require general waste to be separated from recyclables to prevent reusable materials from ending up in landfill.

Most visitors to the CRC follow the rules and are keen to do their part. However, some have reacted negatively to our enforcement efforts, especially since pandemic-era temporary relaxations made waste disposal more lenient. Now that normal rules are back in place, some individuals have struggled to adapt.

The issue

Unfortunately, some members of the public have displayed unacceptable and aggressive behaviour towards our staff. Our team is responsible for enforcing the rules set by Bridgend Council and the Welsh Government, ensuring that waste is disposed of correctly. Dealing with hostility while maintaining a safe and efficient recycling process has been a challenge.

Our solution

To address these issues and improve the experience for both staff and visitors, we implemented several key measures:

  1.     Clear communication and consistency – We reinforced the rules by consistently explaining and enforcing them, helping visitors understand expectations.
  2.     Improved sorting stations – We introduced designated sorting areas with tables and bins, making the process as straightforward and efficient as possible.
  3.     Conflict management training – Our team underwent refreshed conflict de-escalation training to help them handle tense situations effectively.
  4.     Body cameras for staff – To ensure safety and accountability, we equipped staff with body cameras. These serve as a deterrent and provide documentation if further action is needed.
  5.     Performance-based incentives – To motivate and support our team, we launched a financial bonus system that rewards staff based on the amount of properly sorted waste.

The results

While challenges remain, these efforts have made a positive impact. Supporting our staff with training, incentives, and safety measures has helped reestablish proper waste sorting habits. By maintaining clear communication and consistency, we are fostering a more cooperative and effective recycling environment.

Together, we can continue to make a difference for our community and the environment.
